Why I Do What I Do

The specimens I have preserved are the pages of a ten-year story of my deepening connection to the plants and trees that grow around me.

Each one has taken me on a journey to understand what it takes to be a plant. It is a long journey and one that will keep fascinating me throughout my lifetime.
I have studied their complex, mind-blowing morphology, survival techniques and observed the strategies used by each plant to meet its needs despite its immobility; reaching for sun, finding shade, creeping over shale, retaining water or seeking dryness, working with the insects that pollinate or eat them or the animals that browse and snack on them.
It is an honor to live amongst and interact with these diverse life forms every day, season after season.
They are my neighbors and my teachers.
Finding them and learning about them, has brought me a profound appreciation of the beauty of lifeforms way smaller than me,
and the realization that sadly, some of them may become endangered and lost due to human impact and climate shifts.
